Charles Edward Ives (/ aɪ v z /; Octo – ) was an American modernist composer, one of the first American composers of international renown. His music was largely ignored during his early life, and many of his works went unperformed for many years. Later in life, the quality of his music was publicly recognized, and he came to be regarded as an "American original".   The “Concord” has always appeared to me formed by a Liszt Sonata in B Minor that escaped from passage on a mystic Mayflower, hid then between the serrations of tribal arrowheads, next amidst the lines of Puritan sermons, at last reemerging through Ives as his Second Piano Sonata when the old Calvinist headstones in the churchyard turned.

Ives, like American band-composer Sousa, consciously infused patriotic or "blue-blood" themes into his pieces. In the "Concord," he attempted to project, within the music, the 19th century philosophical ideas of the American Transcendentalists, who obviously had a great impact on his world-view. The extravagance of the rhetoric that has been heaped upon Charles Ives’s Second Piano Sonata (“Concord, Mass: ”) would be hard to replicate even if you tried. Lawrence Gilman, in his review of Kirkpatrick’s performance of the Concord Sonata“ ” at its New York.
